Welcome to the Week 4 Newsletter!
This week, we continue our march towards the end of year and the competing agendas that cross our calendars at this time. Next week is a big week for several groups within the school with both Stage 3 camps being held from Wednesday - Friday. These are major events on the Stage 3 calendars - Year 5 to Great Aussie Bush Camp and Year 6 to Canberra. They are certainly events that are looked forward to with anticipation, excitement and perhaps a little bit of nerves (and that's ok). As each student readies themselves with their own packing list I want to acknowledge with gratitude the energies, commitment and focus from the teacher/staff involved in making these camps the positive and memorable opportunity for all students. To say that a 24-hour duty is above and beyond the call for duty is an understatement and it is done because we see the value in what it offers the students.
I would also like to thank the parents for your support (the least of which being the extra financial commitment) to provide the students with these exciting opportunities. Overnight camp experiences foster independence and self-reliance as children learn to manage their belongings, emotions, habits and routines away from home. These experiences also promote social skills and teamwork, as students interact in a different setting, share responsibilities, and forge lasting friendships. And that is all before the experience and learning gained when challenging themselves in various outdoor activities (Year 5) and visiting our capital city (Canberra).
Have a great time at camp next week Year 5 and Year 6 camp!
Another exciting event next week is the first of our Kindergarten 2025 orientation mornings. We have a strong cohort of kindergarten students poised to join our community. Some students are already part of our community with older siblings at our school and others are new families that we will welcome to SBE. Either way, for each 4- or 5-year-old, the orientation program (supported by their Year 5 Buddies, the Kindergarten teachers and various support staff) will be their first steps in their primary school journey and we are so please to have them be part of SBE. The Orientation Program will happen across four Tuesdays (12th, 19th, 26th November and 3rd December). The first morning next Tuesday will include a morning tea hosted by our current Kindergarten parent cohort and the last will include an assembly where the children will receive a Kindergarten Readiness Kit. It is a great program and equips students for a positive transition to SBE life. Their return in 2025 to actually start “big” school will be like returning to a welcoming home they already know. We look forward to getting to know our new friends!
On that note, I am very pleased to confirm that the Kindergarten teachers for 2025 will be Ms Slade and Ms Killen. Ms Slade has been teaching Kindergarten now for a number years and Ms Killen has had vast experience at previous schools teaching Kindergarten also. We are confident they will make a great team in 2025 in supporting each other, their students, their families and whole St. Benedict's community. Miss Sakoff is still a permament teacher in our school but will be teaching on another grade form 2025. As much as she loves, and I'm sure she will miss Kindergarten, she is looking forward to a new challenge and grade next year. We are still finalising staffing details and are hoping to confirm all class teachers for 2025 with the school community in the newsletter next week.
Have a great week everyone!

SPECIAL REPORT: Starting Year 7
Starting Year 7 poses many new challenges, but also exciting opportunities. It comes with a number of mixed feelings. Some students may be feeling a little anxious about their expectations of starting Year 7 and finding their place in the “big pond”. As your child grasps new skills and engages in new study practices, it is important for parents to be supportive, but also realistic in their expectations. Parents and students can easily become overwhelmed during this time of transition but, there are a number of strategies that can be implemented to start things off on the right foot!
School TV have shared a special report on starting Year 7 please follow the link below to view these resources:

Remebrance Day
Thanks to Year 4 Black, who will present our Remembrance day prayer service on Monday at assembly with reverence and respect.
In Australia, Remembrance Day is observed every year on November 11, no matter which day of the week it falls on. It's not a public holiday, but it's a time to remember soldiers who have died in battle. Some schools hold a two-minute silence at 11:00 am. If Remembrance Day is on a weekday, buglers from the Australian Defence Force often play the "Last Post”. Many people stop and observe a moment of silence as they listen to the bugler's call.
World War I started on 28 July 1914 and ended on 11 November 1918. This war was called 'The Great War' until World War II began in 1939. On 11 November 1918, the countries that were fighting agreed to stop, and this was called an Armistice. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919 to make the peace official.
Every year on 11 November, we remember the end of World War I, a day known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. Poppies became a symbol of World War I because they grew in the fields where battles took place. A soldier named John McCrae wrote a famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields' about these poppies. Many people wear red poppies to honour this day.

Debating
St Benedict’s debating team recently travelled to St Joseph’s Kilaben Bay for the regional debating competition. In their first debate, they took the affirmative stance on the topic of technology, which provided valuable experience and insights. Building on this, they approached the second debate, where they argued against shorter school holidays, with renewed confidence. Thanks to the excellent advice they received and the lessons learned from their initial debate, St Benedict’s team delivered a compelling performance and emerged victorious in the second debate. The student’s represented our school beautifully and should be very proud of their achievements.
MAT Program
In the mat program Year 6 are participating in it is building our resilience and assisting us with our transition to high school. We are engaging in activities like push ups, sit-ups, and standing back-to-back with a partner to build our strength for breaking boards at the end of the term. Our code is: be strong, be brave, be kind, try hard. This martial arts program not only enhances our physical abilities but also prepares us for future challenges. Listening, respect and participation are is crucial as we learn.

School Travel Passes
Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.
This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.
All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
