Praying with Children
At Monday mornings assembly I spoke with the children about the importance of prayer during this time of Lent. I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you some, thoughts, ideas, and resources for you to include some prayer in your daily lives with your children.
It is so good that we can talk to our God anywhere, at any time and he listens to us! He gives us all good things, he loves us like a Father loves his children, and he encourages us to bring what matters to us, our worries, and desires, and give them over to him. So how do we encourage our kids to do this?
Below are some things you might be able to use in your family to encourage your kids to pray and develop life-long habits of talking to God. Some ideas you’ll be able to vary for different ages and some things you’ll be able to use with the whole family.
Prayer ideas for the whole family.
- Popcorn prayer—One person opens in prayer, and another closes the prayer. Everyone else pops in when they are ready.
- Prayer circle—Hold hands and pray until everyone prays.
- Prayer journal—Write your family prayers down. You can revisit later and see where God has answered prayer.
- Prayer cards—Everyone writes a prayer request on a card and puts it in a pile. Mix them up and take turns praying for others’ requests.
- Prayer map—Pick places on the map where you have relationships. Pray for family, friends and those less fortunate from that place on the map.
- Thanksgiving—Each person gives a prayers for something they are thankful for.
- Read your favourite story from the Bible—Each person chooses a verse to read.
- Use the 5 Finger Prayer resource https://ministry-to-children.com/five-finger-prayer/
- The Pretzel Prayer: https://www.catholicicing.com/pretzels-for-lent/
I invite all families to take the time to pray along with me this week just as St. Benedict has asked us.
Year 2 Black Class Liturgy
Mrs Greaves and 2 Black jointly constructed a recount of their Liturgy that the held last Tuesday. Mrs Greaves shared their work with me and I was so impressed that I wanted to share it with our school community.
2Black’s Lent Liturgy
Last Wednesday 2Black celebrated our Lenten liturgy in the Saint Mary of the Cross Chapel. The altar was covered in a purple cloth and a holy, purple candle. Some children read Lenten prayers.
During our liturgy, we sang The Lent Song and Love Like Jesus Did. We also wrote our Lenten promise on a purple heart. It is a promise that will help us grow closer to Jesus.
Lucas read, “Accept our Lenten promises which will help us to grow into being better people who love you and care for each other.” We were blessed that some parents and visitors came and prayed with us. It was a peaceful and prayerful Liturgy.
Mrs Greaves also shared photo's of some of the work her class has been doing in Religion Lesson during this Lenten Season.
Yours in faith,
Miss Michelle Collins

Teaching and Curriculum Update
Right Learning, Right Child
As outlined by Jules in our parent meet and greet earlier this term, St. Benedict's has 4 focus goals for 2024. One of those goals is ‘right learning, right child’ at the right time. The school will commit to differentiated instruction in every classroom for every child via multiple entry success criteria, task engagement and assessment rubrics of deepening level of success.
Last week all teachers engaged in their first PLT (Professional Learning Teams) meeting for 2024. These teams are a combination of classroom teachers, specialists teachers and the executive members. Theses teams focus on analysis of data, followed by a collaborative discussion as a stage or grade group, on what this data is telling us to plan ahead.
Our PLT meetings are held every 3 weeks and this creates time for a 3 week data cycle. Each grade chooses a specific focus area in Maths and collects initial data (pre-data). This data is analysed to set specific goals for each child and the grade cohort around foundational capability such as skip counting, place value and splitting numbers, friends to 10/ 20 or 100. The teachers collaboratively plan targeted activities with these goals as a priority. At the end of the 3 week cycle, the teachers collect post data (after the 3 week teaching cycle) for discussion at the next PLT. This is a time to celebrate the successes and growth of our students and plan for the next 3 weeks cycle.
The Maths data cycle wall is visible for all teachers to see and some of the conversations around the wall is fabulous! It really is a reminder that we do own ALL of the students, no matter what our role is in the school.
The teachers plan using the outcomes from the new K-6 Mathematics syllabus, and the numeracy progressions to target specific goals and track student growth. We are using an online platform 'Essential assessment', aligned to the Mathematics syllabus to pre and post assess each student based on the specific goal agreed upon on their PLT's. This supports teachers in data driven teaching by providing curriculum aligned data to plan and monitor growth.
Below are the Mathematics goals each grade will be working towards over the next 3 week cycle.

Information Update
It is important to keep your contact information up to date at all times.
Occasionally your child may be unwell and we need to be able to contact a parent or carer in this case.
If you have changed workplace, mobile or home number, you are able to change this through the compass app. Alternatively you can contact our office and we can assist you with this.
Medical
If your child has a medical condition please let our office know.
We are here to support your child and if they require medication, ventolin or an epipen we are able to administor and keep these medication at the school.
It is important that our school knows if your child requires medication and we have it on record in caase of an emergency.
There is a form that needs to be completed and a copy of the Asthma, Anaphylaxis or Medical plan needs to been supplied.
Please don't let your child bring medication to school and keep it in their bag. This can be a risk to not only them but other students.
Speak to our office if you require any further information or would like a form to complete.
School Fees
School fee statements will be coming out to families in the next few weeks.
Payments can be made via B/pay, Direct debt, EFTPOS, over the counter at our school or over the phone. These payment can be set up through your internet banking to be paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
We ask that all Fee Payers closely review your current account, paying particular attention to:

Health Care and Pension Card Holders
We would like to bring to your attention that Health Care and Pension card holders are eligible for a discount off the Diocesan Tuition fee. If you have a valid 2024 card, you can apply for this discount by completing the attached form and returning it to our school office together with a copy of your card. This will ensure that the appropriate discount is applied to 2024 fees. This application needs to lodged at each school where each of your children attend.
These forms can be scanned and emailed to admin@edgeworth.catholic.edu.au.
Compass
By now families should have compass log in information, usernames and passowrds. It is important that you use this app as it is a critical part of our school communication.
- Our staff use this app to contact parents, upload school reports, mark rolls and much more.
- Parent are able to submit attendance notifictions on the app, check reports, and review, pay and download fee statements.
Compass is also used for all our school events and permisssion must be done in order for your child to attend. The form below allows both parents to be listed as "joint" account holders and therefore allowing either parent to provide permission for an excursion/event. The default on COMPASS is that both parents can view the event BUT only the parent listed as fee payer can provide permission. Many parents elect to change this. If you wish this to happen, please complete the form.
Regional Swimming Carnival
Last Monday, St Benedict's had the honour of hosting the Lakes Regional Swimming Carnival at Lambton Pool. A huge thanks to Mrs.Hunt and Mr Moore for organising the day which was held under difficult conditions caused by the weather.
As a result we were only able to complete the freestyle and relay events. Diocesan carnival qualification for incompleted events (Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly) will be determined by times sent in by each school.
Well done to all our swimmers who participated in the carnival and gave their best. A special congratulations to Mackenzie Hunter (8Yrs 50m Freestyle) and Kiani Miller (10Yrs 50m Freestyle, Jnr. 50m Breaststroke, Jnr. 50m Backstroke, Jnr. 50m Butterfly) who have been selected in the Lakes Regional Team to compete at the Diocesan Carnival. Good luck girls!
School Swimming Carnival Presentation
Swimming place ribbons and Age Champion trophies have arrived at school so we will have our School Swimming Carnival Presentation during this Monday's Morning Assembly.
